Here is a story that demonstrates the fulfilment and joy of living your dreams out loud, according to your natural and authentic makeup – your gifts, talents, passions, values, etc.
My husband (the National Sales Manager) has always been a lover of gadgets and a tinkerer of things.
Over the 5 years that we’ve been together, I have observed his need and love to purchase new toys. I have also noticed that these new toys were real old and boring, real quick and never to be used again.
I realised, it was not the want of the gadgets, so much so, as the need and want to open them up, put them together, and work them out.
The other thing I noticed was the fact that he loved to service our cars, anyone’s car actually, and he loved to watch anything on TV to do with restorations, houses, cars, etc. He seemed to be happiest and in his element when fixing, improving and tinkering with things. He can fix anything too. The heater, computer, car, you name it.
One day I asked his mother, “did John spend most of his time pulling things apart to see how they worked when he was young”? “Yes, how did you know that”? Was the answer.
You see, our passions and gifts are part of the roadmap to our purpose and potential. They are exposed by what we do and love, when we are young. You know, before life, needs, opinions, challenges and other things get in our way.
So I encouraged my husband to buy an old car and restore it.
Of course all the excuses that come to stop us from reaching out potential, surfaced. “It will cost too much, we don’t have the room in the garage” etc.
So I put my trusty excuse shield on, (much like the one Wonder Woman had on her wrists) and I deflected them all.
“We can make room by parking the other cars outside” and “what would you rather have at the end of your life to count, money or experiences”
Ching-whoosh-Ching. Excuses deflected!
So out he went and came back with the biggest heap of junk I’ve ever seen!
It was filthy, smelly, broken, dented, chipped and a whole heap of other words that describe, well, crap.
I could not, for the life of me, see a vision of what this dirty old range rover could be, but he could, because he has that gift.
So, long story short, he spent months of work (that I would have found to be the biggest nightmare if I had to do it) and he loved every minute of it. He found out he was capable of, even more than he imaged. He never would have known if he didn’t take the risk to find out.
He did everything from the panel beating, to the paintwork. He relined the interior, did the mechanics and even put in electric leather seats, where electric seats have never been before, (this was impossible, according to a guy that has worked at range rover for 25 years).
It was a lot of blood sweat and tears, but He had so much fun, living his dreams out loud. He has experienced a new level of fulfilment that only living your talents and passions can bring.
Goethe says – ‘Talent finds happiness in execution’ and it is so correct. So go ahead and find your talents, all of them and let them find happiness in execution.
I have had clients say to me “I don’t really have any talents”. If you think you don’t, remember this, the average person has around 600 abilities. So if you look, you will find some.
I am so proud of my husband, not because he is so clever and the car looks amazing, but because he took a chance to pursue and live his dreams and found in it, happiness and fulfilment.
Reflect and respond
Do your have dreams that you have been putting off?
Would you like to borrow my excuse shields?
There is always a reason not to do something, but the trick is, to look for all the reasons you should.
At the end of your life wouldn’t you rather count your experiences?
